Google learns to crawl flash
Everyone should recognize this as horrible, horrible news:
Google has been developing a new algorithm for indexing textual content in Flash files of all kinds, from Flash menus, buttons and banners, to self-contained Flash websites… In the past, web designers faced challenges if they chose to develop a site in Flash because the content they included was not indexable by search engines.Any website that uses Flash as a major design element deserves to be spurned by search engines. This news is great in terms of the advancement of crawling technology, but I hope this doesn’t encourage flash sites. Plus, there’s a number of problems with presenting search results for flash content, the most obvious being direct linking to the result. Any result will probably be linked to the flash object itself, and if it’s an all-flash website, this means finding the snippet yourself.
There probably are workarounds to this, though, and I can just see the legions of corporate flash site designers salivating. Why, Google, why?
